Our 2 cents - Music

Hip Hop may be dead, but with the reemergence of the distinctive and sultry vocalist Lalah Hathaway and her newest music titled Lalah Hathaway - Self Portrait, good ole' rhythm and blues is alive and well.

From the up tempo hit Let Go to the jazzy slow jams like On Your Own we are captivated with true testaments of what she has gone through, endured, learned and what has made her what she is today.

On her website she describes the her newest work “This album is like a movie of my life over the last couple of years,” she says.  “The portrait I see of myself is of a very confident, smart woman who is extremely funny, independently wealthy and well-traveled – all things that I am to a small degree....Every day, I realize that I’m walking toward the woman I’m going to be.  She’s there.  I can see her. “

I can see this cd as a portrait of many women.  Learn to Swim describes forgiveness and learning to trust once the one that hurt or disappointed you in the hopes that things will change. One of my favorites on this CD,  Tragic Inevitability chorus' "What will be will be"  along with the single Let Go are expressions in song of a woman who has accepted what she can't change and works on changing herself.

Her neo-soul persona in this pop culture world will not garner her paparazzi notoriety. But that is because she has talent.  I'm Comin' Back , circa 1991 still has heavy iPod rotation with me and no doubt this masterpiece of mature self expression will garner a new generation of fans.

Available on iTunes and Amazon and music stores everywhere.
